Janet Duncan

Janet Duncan is a Jamestown S'Klallam Tribal Member and respected Elder. She is from the Ellis-Becker family and was born at the old Sequim Hospital in 1937. As an adult Janet had a strong desire to introduce her grandson to his Native American culture, thus she began volunteering at various tribal activities. Janet also gave of her time working with the Jamestown Children's Program and this is where her passion for beadwork was born. She learned beading from a fellow Tribal Member at the age of 48. Janet's enthusiasm for the art is infectious and she continues to give much of her time helping others to learn the art of beading.

Cradle Board

In the days before car seats and playpens, Indian babies were carried in cradleboards that could be strapped on their mothers' back or propped up while the mother did her chores. Cradleboards protected the baby from danger and allowed the mother freedom to work and travel. Often the boards were decorated with elaborate beadwork that told stories of the parents' dreams for their child.
