The legend of the "Puk-ubs" is about the whaling traditions of the Makah people. The whalers were physically and mentally well prepared for their task, but sometimes they would be lost at sea. This legendary figure is about a whaling expedition where one of the whalers is lost overboard. The priority of the other members of the crew is to continue the hunt. After an extended period in the water, the lost whaler's body would sometimes wash up onto a beach, then transform into another state of life. With his hair still tied back in the whaler's tradition, lacking eyes, his skin white and wrinkled, he then becomes known as Puk-ubs.
