More from Micah Vogel Micah VogelThe booming of Micah Vogel's voice can be heard singing at any potlatch, family gathering, or celebration. Making sure his family songs and history are remembered is very important to Micah. Good spirited and artistically gifted, Micah James Vogel was given the name "Sallawish" at his naming potlatch. His roots in the small coastal tribal village of Neah Bay are deep. A life-long resident of the Makah Reservation, his devotion to the Makah culture and Tribal arts is apparent everyday in his singing, ceremonial dancing and art. Micah is the best of the new young artists-remembering the past, but creating new images and composing new songs for the future. Northwest Indian Magazine - Melissa Peterson More Related Items PukThe legend of the "Puk-ubs" is about the whaling traditions of the Makah people. The whalers were physically and mentally well prepared for their task, but sometimes they would be lost at sea. This legendary figure is about a whaling expedition where one of the whalers is lost overboard. The priority of the other members of the crew is to continue the hunt. After an extended period in the water, the lost whaler's body would sometimes wash up onto a beach, then transform into another state of life. With his hair still tied back in the whaler's tradition, lacking eyes, his skin white and wrinkled, he then becomes known as Puk-ubs.
