Whales Up
by John Goodwin

Numbered print, shrink wrapped

Years ago, the five tribes of Makah's or "qidicca?atx", people of the cape, like their relatives to the north on Vancouver Island, enjoyed the spoils of whaling. My Grandfather, Roger Colfax, spoke his language. One day when I was young, he said to me, "In order for the crew in the canoe to know the exact possession of the whale, they had 23 different ways of saying whales up". Whaling to the tribes were their main source of food and an item of trade. Whale blubber could cut into suitcase size portions and were worth a lot in trade, because of the protein content.
